Our Practice in Action – Building the Sustainable Venture ‘Case’ for Renewable Energy

SVI has a recognized understanding of the clean technology marketplace, technology capacities, financing and paths to market. In 2006 SVI was engaged by a provincial government to assist in advancing their renewable energy policy and program development. Representatives of the provincial government declared their intent to position the province at the ‘forefront in development of renewable energy projects’.

The province had released a framework strategy document on renewable energy and had identified a need to collect and analyze current market data, so as to advance the investment potential for renewable energy. With these goals and context in mind, SVI conducted a comprehensive research project including:

  • Extensive review and analysis of current policy framework, evolution of policy, key actors influencing the policy context;
  • Examination and comparative analysis of projects and practices across other Canadian jurisdictions with specific emphasis on the application and results of ‘best practices’;
  • Assessment of the provinces’ opportunities to access federal funding for it’s renewable energy strategy;
  • An evaluation framework describing prioritization of provincial initiatives based on building the case for sustainable ventures with private and public funding sources;
  • Established a need for and process to create ‘shared vision’ for advancing the renewable energy framework, aligning 5 departments’ policies and programs to coordinate, collaborate and complement action plans.

Following completion of this research project, SVI has been retained by one of the participating departments to identify and evaluate financing for specific renewable fuel projects.
